Cayucos Elementary School

The Cayucos Elementary School Board hired RRM Design Group to help them modernize their K-8 campus, and add a multipurpose building to meet a variety of needs. As a gymnasium, the multipurpose building supports competitive sports as well as physical education, including locker rooms. As an assembly room, the stage is configurable into a variety of scenes to support theatrical productions, musical productions or simple assemblies. The building also houses a full kitchen and cafeteria as well as four classrooms. As an added bonus, project cost savings due to a favorable bid climate allowed the District to replace all the relocatable classrooms on campus with new permanent construction. With abundant natural daylight, acoustically balanced and isolated rooms, high-efficiency heating and cooling with fresh air, and multilevel indirect/direct lighting, the new classrooms provide a positive environment for learning.

The campus received additional upgraded improvements such as a new kindergarten playground and a new hard top play yard. An interior courtyard space was created that doubles as an outdoor classroom. The modernization also extended to the existing 1936 administration building with a complete renovation of the exterior and portions of the interior. As a result of its energy management system and highly efficient classrooms, the new campus has reduced the District’s utility costs despite the addition of the new gymnasium. The project also includes renovation of existing classrooms into a community library. Accessibility improvements enable students, teachers and visitors to travel freely across a 30+’ grade change from the lower to upper campus. A new ramp, stairways and landscaping provide an attractive and important connection from the play area and newly modernized community library to classrooms and offices on the upper campus.
