SLO council approves 580-home San Luis Ranch project

San Luis Ranch, one of two major housing development projects being planned for San Luis Obispo, has been approved by the City Council.
The council gave its go-ahead Tuesday to build the project, which proposes 580 homes along with a hotel, office and commercial space on a 131-acre site near Madonna Road and Highway 101. The vote was 4-0. Council member Andy Pease recused herself, saying she had contracted with RRM Design Group, the project architect, within the past year.
The project, submitted by developer Gary Grossman, calls for 282 single-family units with two-car garages and 298 multi-family units. Of those, 34 deed-restricted affordable units would be integrated into the neighborhoods, designated for various levels of low-income residents.
City Manager Katie Lichtig said that with the project she believes city staff and the council were living up to their oath to leave the community “a better place.”
The site will still need to be annexed by the city because it’s on county land.
The separate Avila Ranch project, proposed by developer Andy Mangano, seeks to build 720 homes with retail and office space and parks off Buckley Road in southern San Luis Obispo. That proposal will next be discussed by the city Planning Commission on Aug. 9.
