San Luis Obispo Railroad Safety Trail

Commissioned by the City of San Luis Obispo, RRM Design Group completed two phases of work for the multi-phased community trail within the Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way. RRM prepared design plans and final alignment for the first segment of the trail, which connects to the Jennifer Street railroad crossing bridge and provides a link from adjacent neighborhoods to a City park and the historic Railroad District at the south edge of downtown. RRM prepared construction documents, signage, fencing, landscaping and public art for this multi-use trail. The railroad trail is open and enjoyed by walkers, bikers and bladers of all ages. After completion of Phase I, RRM completed an alignment and design study for the Rails with Trails Bicycle Commuting Trail and assisted City staff in negotiations with Union Pacific Railroad to secure a use agreement. This final phase consists of property lease and acquisition agreements, comprehensive route and design, preliminary trail engineering, cost analysis, and environmental clearance following CEQA guidelines.
