El Verano Senior Apartments

El Verano Apartments is a 54-unit affordable senior community located in the heart of southern Anaheim. The three-story, Spanish-style building is home to formerly homeless and low-income seniors, and consists of 44 one-bedroom units, 10 two-bedroom units, and an array of outdoor and community amenities. All units are mobility accessible and thoughtfully designed to enhance the quality of life for residents.

The formerly crime-plagued, 1950’s-era Sandman Motel was purchased by the City of Anaheim in 2017 to prompt revitalization. El Verano was financed through low-income tax credits and community partnerships. Construction completed—on time and under budget—and units opened in July 2021.

The new senior community assists residents in successfully transitioning to a stable and supportive living community. The development team partnered with community stakeholders, electeds, and residents to design and install four public art pieces including a living mural. The focus on high-quality design, layout, landscaping, age-appropriate amenities, and common spaces promotes health, wellness, and connection among residents and the surrounding community.

Now fully occupied, residents pay a maximum of 30% of their income to live here. The balance of the rent is covered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
