Claremont: Revisited

In 2001, well before “transit-oriented development” (TOD) became the rage of the planning world that it is today, the Southern California community of Claremont approved the Claremont Village West Specific Plan. Known for its universities and the charm of its Village area, which contains a historic train depot that currently serves as Metrolink commuter rail station, the City of Claremont wanted to revitalize an area just west of its downtown. Leveraging the location of the Metrolink station that would be the future home to a new Gold Line light rail station, the City of Claremont adopted the Specific Plan to guideand facilitate the mixed-use infill development of a largely industrial area just north of the Metrolink tracks. Today, just 10 short years later, we visited the site to find a fully built-out, stunning example of successful TOD.
